Digging Your Heels In…
Did you know ?…
...that there are over 75000 nerve endings in your foot that connect to other parts of the body?
No wonder so many people suffer a variety of issues with their feet! As a Reflexologist, I treat patients with a lot of physical issues, one of the most common being Plantar Fasciitis. This condition is characterised by pain on the bottom of one or both heels, caused by irritation to the plantar fascia, which are the dense tissue bands that connect the heels to the toes.
Recently, a gentleman called Ronald, aged 84, came to me with great discomfort and a “10/10” pain in the heel, with a simultaneous “surging pain” to the side of his foot when applying any pressure. This resulted in him having difficulty walking any distance in comfort. After our initial consultation, we decided to treat for Plantar Fasciitis and agreed on a treatment plan going forward.
The treatment plan
This included three intense 1 hour hands-on sessions over a six week period, a review of any lifestyle or footwear changes since the pain started, postural analysis, Vertical Reflexology Techniques (VRT), foot movement exercises and other homecare advice. The latter being as essential as the treatment itself.
Vertical Reflexology Techniques are a unique method of weight-bearing reflexology, which is briefly applied to the dorsal feet and hands. It was developed by Lynne Booth over a period of 20 years and her accredited classes have been taught to over 8,000 reflexologists internationally.
During Ronald’s visits to Creative Chiro, following our treatment plan, he saw noticeable improvements in his original pain levels, gradually moving down the scale from the original 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. At the end of the 6-week plan, we had him back in his original footwear, rolling a massage ball to loosen and manage any tension in the heel (this was done while he watched TV). We also worked on his balance and posture with the help of VRT. Ronald can now walk 2 miles, something he enjoyed doing prior to the plantar fasciitis. The pain is now a zero and the plan going forward is for regular, ongoing sessions, just to make sure it doesn’t return.
Ronald says…
“Reflexology got rid of a lot of pain in my feet and I do walk better than I did. I feel I am more upright than before”
