Improve your mental wellbeing

At Creative Chiro we continue to strive in finding ways to work closely with our patients and we are finding that our patients seek more in depth understanding of how to improve their overall health and fitness, specifically on ways to achieve their personal goals and aspirations and overall, quite simply wanting to ‘Eat Well, Move Well and Think Well’. In this article we want to focus the ‘Think Well’ aspect…

Initially, people tend to find us at Creative Chiro when they are in physical pain. Pain is not only painful(!) but also has the ability to wear you down and will often begin to affect your mood. Long term or chronic pain can cause a number of problems leading to depression, trouble sleeping and stress. This type of pain can lead to low self-esteem, work problems, health issues or financial concerns.

So, getting you out of pain and moving again will help to release hormones in the body such as endorphins. These are peptide hormones that act as neurotransmitters. To put it another way, they are chemicals that help to carry signals across the natural gap between nerve endings (nerve synapse). They are released when the body is under the right type of stress such as exercise, and create feelings of euphoria and well-being, in addition to reducing pain. These peptide hormones are naturally-occurring substances that circulate in the blood, and can improve muscle growth as well as change the balance of other hormones and increase the production of red blood cells which, in turn, increases the level of oxygen delivery. Examples of these peptide hormones are insulin and the human growth hormone. When you increase your exercise, you are naturally producing these euphoria-producing ‘happy hormones’ and when you are happy, you generally tend to think more clearly.

So on that basis, here are five easy things you can do to begin to improve your mental wellbeing…

Improving your mood can all be a little challenging at times and sometimes difficult to do for a variety of reasons (if it was easy, we would all be in perfect mental health), especially for those with chronic health issues. However, for the majority, small changes are possible which can have a very positive knock on effect to your overall health.
